Of 127,000 persons of Japanese ancestry residing in the continental
U.S. in 1942, 112,000 lived in the West Coast. One third were
Japanese immigrants barred from naturalized citizenship. Two-thirds
were American-born U.S. citizens (half of them minors). All were forcibly removed from the Exclusion Zone (gray area) during World War II.
Over 100,000 were sent ten War Relocation Authority Incarceration Camps, then known as "Relocation Centers." About 8000 were identified "dangerous enemy aliens" and sent to detention camps operated by the Department of Justice, Immigration service or the U.S. Army.

Since WRA incarceration camps in remote inland areas took time to build, residents were temporarily held at 17 county fairgrounds, racetracks and other "Assembly Centers."
